The Future Looks Bleak For Your Local Multiplex:
Soon, you’ll be able to watch movies at home—in high-definition and with 7.1 surround sound—on the day they open in theaters. Well, not you, really, because you won’t be able to afford it. With a $15,000 entry fee, and with movies going for $250 a pop, day-and-date viewing will only be within the means of about the top 5% of hard-working Americans.
Those prices are tentative and might go up or down by the time the first services launch as early as next year. But if they go down, it won’t be by much. The movie studios have made it abundantly clear that this isn’t something they want to see trickle down to the masses any time soon.
